Home is one sanctuary where people prefer to have time to themselves and escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. To include a college baseball player in the sanctuary could appear a stretch, but not to host families in the Coastal Plain League. The Outer Banks Daredevils had 24 families open their homes to players and interns last season and look for more good stories from them next season.

Mike Mazza and his family hosted Daredevil Travis Sink in 2007, and wondered at first about bringing in a player to eat and sleep in their home.

"People might have some apprehension about taking one in, but it goes away fast because you interact, and it's a real good social experience," Mazza said.

According to NCAA rules, college baseball players can not be paid for living expenses and other costs. It requires summer leagues such as the CPL to use host families to house more than 280 players its 14 teams, which stretch from Virginia to North and South Carolina.

Mazza had friends who brought in players and believed he might share in the same positive experience. Many stay in touch with the players they house after the season. Host family Larry Gray and his son, Matthew, remains in touch with 2007 player Tyler Howe, who is now in the farm system of the New York Mets.

The players also become good role models for younger kids in the house. Sink was the same to Mazza's son, George. The two shared a room.

"We enjoyed the young man, and he had an outstanding personality," Mazza said. "He was terrific, and he and my son were good friends."

We would like to say a special thank you to all the host families who have generously offered up their houses for the 2008 season to house our players and staff. We could not have continued the season without you!

Becoming a host family for our players on the Outer Banks Daredevils is a critical and very important role in the success and in the lives of these athletes. Living on the Outer Banks as a host family offers our players a once in a lifetime opportunity to play among top prospects in the hottest collegiate summer league, the Coastal Plain League.

The Outer Banks Daredevils have developed an excellent reputation for hosting baseball players each summer. This year is no different — and as we reach out to you once again for your help and support in order to ensure another outstanding host family program.
