The Outer Banks Daredevils Baseball Club has tabbed Alex Margulies as its webcaster for the 2009 season. Margulies will call games through the Coastal Plain League's Webpass, streamed via Internet.
Margulies will complete a degree in broadcast journalism at the University of Miami (FL) in May, where he has been the play-by-play broadcaster for baseball, football, men's and women's basketball and volleyball for WVUM 90.5 FM.
"I enjoy covering all sports, but baseball is my favorite and definitely my passion," Margulies said. "I've looked at places to work this summer and remembered the CPL. I've vacationed on the Outer Banks and thought if I could work there it would be a great gig."
In addition to covering all 30 Daredevils home games, Margulies will also write feature pieces on the team for www.obxdaredevils.com to give fans more in-depth Outer Banks coverage.
He has been a sports anchor and reporter for the school's TV station and served internships at FSN Florida/Sun Sports, 790 The Ticket, Miami's ABC station WPLG 10 and Major League Baseball's Florida Marlins.
For the past year he has worked with ACCSelect.com as a freelance broadcaster in men's and women's basketball and baseball. ACCSelect.com gives league fans a chance to see contests not available through traditional broadcast and cable television distribution.
"This is big for our team and fans listening to have Alex calling our games," Outer Banks General Manager Owen Hassell said. "He has a wealth of experience and has seen some great baseball at Miami. I enjoyed being the webcaster last season, but I am certain Alex will take it to a much higher level."
Margulies has been around quality talent for the Hurricanes in his four years, seeing Miami baseball as a top five program and covering its super regional last spring, as well as all-ACC men's basketball player Jack McClinton and an annual power in Miami football.
His coverage on famed baseball player and Miami alum Alex Rodriguez on his latest donation to the school's baseball park, now named Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field, was picked up by Foxsports.com.
Rodriguez's admission to using steroids made the banquet in his honor a bit more compelling.
"It was interesting when it would've been just me and a few others, instead there were news organizations everywhere like CNN," Margulies said. "There was a lot of scrutiny, but he wasn't shy about it, saying, 'I want to welcome my friends in the back' pointing to all of the media and admitting he had made a mistake."
Margulies looks to help better spotlight the Daredevils as they compete to win the program's third Petitt Cup title in team history.
"There's a wide variety of players in the Coastal Plain League and it's a very competitive summer league," Margulies said. "I'm proud to be part of it. I can't wait to get to know a lot of the people who know the team and provide them content that maybe they've never had before."
The Daredevils begin play Wednesday, May 27th, against CPL North Division rival Edenton at First Flight Baseball Complex and nine of their first 13 games are at home. To check out the entire schedule and roster updates for Outer Banks, go to www.obxdaredevils.com.
