Owen Hassell

Owen Hassell - General Manager

Hassell enters his second summer as the general manager of the Outer Banks Daredevils. In his first year, the team achieved its highest-ever attendance for an entire season (28,646 fans) and won the first half Coastal Plain League North Division title. He was the team's webcaster in 2008, calling play-by-play the team's games through the Coastal Plain League's Internet Webpass. He was the sports editor for the Outer Banks Sentinel newspaper from 2002-07, covering the Daredevils and high school sports. His duties include player personnel and staff, recruitment of host families and game day operations. "It's an exciting time for me to be a part of this team," Hassell said. "We have grown each year to be a stronger component of the community, and we look to do more to give fans a great summer experience at the park." Hassell, 30, graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2002 with a BA in Journalism and Mass Communication.

Kevin Morris - Sales

Morris has worked a number of positions for the Daredevils, most in a volunteer role. He will now add sales to the list, which includes public address announcer, host family, concessions and maintenance around First Flight Baseball Complex. Morris will help generate sponsors for the Daredevils as well as maintain relationships with current sponsors.

Steve Saunders - Stadium Operations

Saunders is an assistant coach for basketball and baseball at First Flight High School. The Nighthawks and Daredevils have used the same field, First Flight Baseball Complex, each season since 2006. He is in charge of general upkeep and maintenance of the baseball field.

Cheryl Johnson - Official Scorer

Johnson has worked as the Daredevils' official scorer since 2006, when the team moved from Manteo to Kill Devil Hills. Her dedication has shown in rarely missing a game in the last four years, and her knowledge of The Official Scorebook computer program used for scoring games.

Bryan Holland - Webcaster/Sales

Holland, a Maryland native and 2009 Elon University grad, will be the voice of the Daredevils in 2010. His past work includes football, basketball and baseball for Elon and play-by-play internships at Aberdeen and Frederick, both single A minor league baseball teams. He was ranked No. 19 in the country's top collegiate broadcasters by Sportscasters Talent Agency of America. Holland will start in March and help with sales before settling into his broadcaster duties.

About the Daredevils PDF Print E-mail

The Outer Banks Daredevils Baseball Club is one of 15 teams in the Coastal Plain League. The CPL is a summer collegiate baseball league offering experience for college players in a wood bat environment and a chance to refine skills for the pro level. Players come from Division I, II and III, as well as NAIA and junior college schools. It is sanctioned by the NCAA and Major League Baseball.

Outer Banks began its play in the CPL in 1997, then returned in 1999 with a new owner, Warren Spivey. The team played its games from 1997-2005 at Coy Tillett Memorial Field at Manteo High School. In 2005 the team was sold to local businessman Marcus Felton, who moved the team to First Flight Baseball Complex in Kill Devil Hills, where the team will begin its fifth season in 2010.

League teams are in Virginia (Petersburg, Peninsula, Martinsville), North Carolina (Outer Banks, Edenton, Wilson, Fayetteville, Wilmington, Forest City, Thomasville, Gastonia, Asheboro, Morehead City) and South Carolina (Florence, Columbia).

The Daredevils have won two Petitt Cup championships (2002, 2003), the award for the league champion. Outer Banks is in the North Division of the CPL with Edenton, Wilson, Peninsula and Petersburg. The South (Fayetteville, Florence, Morehead City, Wilmington, Columbia) and West (Martinsville, Asheboro, Thomasville, Forest City, Gastonia) are the other two divisions.
